NFL: Weekend Notebook
News and highlights from a full weekend of NFL action. Most items relate to the fantasy world, but if you're not finding the help you need here, post a question on our message boards or check out Tuesday's edition of Free Agent Finds.

Two More Scores For Andre Johnson
Texans wideout Andre Johnson caught seven passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns touchdown passes on Sunday, his second straight performance with at least seven receptions, 100 yards and one TD. He's clicking with new QB Matt Schaub and again catching everything thrown his way. Last season, he led the NFL in receptions (103) with QB David Carr throwing him the football.

Another Texans Note
Houston improved to 2-0 for the first time in franchise history after going 24-56 in its previous five seasons. The Texans have outscored opponents 54-24 in their first two victories to open the year.

Smith The Only Factor For Carolina
Steve Smith can't do everything for the Panthers. He staked them to a 14-0 lead with a pair of first quarter touchdown catches, but the Panthers offense and defense was abysmal in a 34-21 loss to the Texans. Smith averaged 19.1 yards per catch, while five other receivers averaged just 8.1 ypc.

Shootout In Cleveland
Can't say I saw this coming. Browns starting QB Derek Anderson went touchdown for touchdown with the Bengals' Carson Palmer, and Cleveland outlasted Cincinnati 51-48 in Cleveland on Sunday. You gotta check out the box score on this one -- top three performers were Palmer (401 yards, 6 TDs), Anderson (328 yards, 5 TDs) and Jamal Lewis (215 yards, TD).

Garrard Solid In Second Straight Start
It was more bad news for fantasy owners with Jaguars wide receivers. QB David Garrard was solid again, but completed 17 of his passes to nine different receivers on his way to 272 yards and a touchdown. He's spreading the ball around, which renders many of the team's wideouts useless. Watch Garrard though, the Jags schedule looks like it will be very quarterback friendly.

Tampa Bay Shocks New Orleans
Surely the Buccaneers and Colts are not quite as good as they've played against the Saints, which paints an early picture of what New Orleans' season has been like. They can't stop anybody, get the passing game going or free up running backs Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush. The "it" factor is gone from the 2006 season, which should be a big time concern for fantasy owners with a piece of the Saints offense.

Gunslinger Circles The Wagons For Packers
QB Brett Favre completed 29-of-38 passes for 286 yards and three touchdowns and the Pack beat the Giants 35-13 on Sunday. Receivers James Jones and Donald Driver inflicted much of the damage, combining for 12 catches and 148 yards, but three other players caught at least four passes from Favre. More help should be on the way for the Pack, which could be a scary thing for that offense. Greg Jennings, the team's No. 2 receiver, and Vernand Morrency, the likely starting running back, are expected to play their first games next week vs. San Diego.

Can Derrick Ward Take Brandon Jacobs' Job?
This is a legitimate question. Ward's been talking regularly with Tiki Barber, who won a starting job from Ron Dayne in similar fashion in 1999, and is hoping that a similar scenario plays out with he and Jacobs. Ward turned in another good performance even when the Giants offense struggled with an injured Eli Manning under center. He rushed 15 times for 90 yards and added four catches for 35 yards.

Bills Passing Game Ugly Again
The Steelers and Broncos are two tough early season barometers, but Bills quarterback J.P. Losman has been less than stellar thus far. Buffalo was never in contention in a 26-3 loss to Pittsburgh on Sunday, and Losman threw for just 154 yards as the Bills fell to 0-2. It could get a lot worse before it gets better. The Bills' next four opponents are New England, the New York Jets, Dallas and Baltimore.

Titans ALMOST Have Colts Number
Tennessee ended the game in Indianapolis territory, but was ultimately denied of a victory, 22-20, in a third straight closely contested contest with the Colts. Despite the disparity in talent, Young and the Titans never went away, going score for score with the potent Colts offense. Adam Vinatieri field goals to close the first half and open the second were the only two instances where the Colts scored without a Titans response.

Tennessee Offense Relies On The Run
Fantasy owners don't want to hear it, but there's a backfield committee happening in Tennessee that's likely going to be unpredictable for the rest of the season. A "hot hand" scenario played out again when LenDale White got the lion's share of carries and cashed in with 15 carries, 64 yards and a touchdown. Week 1 sensation Chris Brown carried 12 times for 34 yards, though it's worth noting that his best work came in the fourth quarter (4 rushes, 18 yards).

Raiders Not The Doormat We Expected
The Raiders are 0-2 - just like last season - but they've done it in a lot more respectable fashion in 2007. The LaMont Jordan Oakland signed as a free agent in 2006 has shown up and made nearly all the difference. He was a key component of Oakland's passing game in a 36-21 loss to Detroit in Week 1, then rushed for 159 yards on 25 carries against Denver on Sunday. The Raider defense doesn't look to have quite the same edge, but is good enough for them to remain competitive, so long as Jordan keeps doing what he's doing.

New England Makes Statement Against Chargers
The Patriots came out guns a blazin' against the Chargers in the Sunday night game, putting up 38 points and proving their point that they are not cheaters. Tom Brady diced up the San Diego secondary to the tune of an 80.6 completion percentage (25-of-31), 279 yards and three TDs, and the defense held the Chargers to 201 total yards, only 58 of which belonged to halfback LaDainian Tomlinson. New England has improved in all aspects of the game since last season and looks to be on a collision course for the AFC Championship Game and a date with Indianapolis.
