| Jan. 28, 2008 - This week's media frenzy will provide every storyline fans could possibly want or need, but here are 10 of our most notable stories of this postseason anyway. From Tom Brady's infamous boot to Vince Young's newest football image, we'll take a look at all of the relevant pre-Super Bowl news headlines. |
10. Quick change in Vince Young's career outlook: Vince Young was once a savior to the Tennessee Titans franchise, leading the team to six wins in its final seven games as a rookie. In his sophomore season, Young, in part because of a quad injury, was nearly benched for backup Kerry Collins in its playoff loss at San Diego. Sure, the injury was part of it, but Young made it easy to question when, if ever, he'll be able to make winning plays with his arm. 9. Rivers barks at Indy fans: In his defense, Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers didn't do anything in San Diego's win at Indianapolis than he had all season. He plays like an irate teenager, and against the Colts, cameras caught him on multiple, multiple occasions jawing with fans at the RCA Dome. Considering he was captured by CBS cameras during the regular season telling his own fans to "shut up", this shouldn't have been a national headline. 8. Cowboys' coach Phillips suddenly in hot water: Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips reminded owner Jerry Jones of just how hungry Dallas was for a playoff victory. America's Team hasn't won a postseason game since 1996, and Phillips, leading the NFC's top-seeded team, failed to come through with his first career playoff victory (0-4). After the season was over, Jones constructed a succession plan to keep offensive coordinator Jason Garrett in Dallas. Phillips' days in Big D are numbered. 7. Ryan Grant coughs it up, then carries Packers: Packers running back Ryan Grant's Cinderella season appeared to be coming to a fiery crash in the Divisional Round when he fumbled twice in the game's first minute and nine seconds. But, he picked up the pieces and rushed for a Packers-record 201 yards and scored three touchdowns in Green Bay's 42-20 shallacking of visiting Seattle. 6. LaDainian Tomlinson misses better part of two games with knee injury: LT admittedly had never dealt with a leg injury before, but he didn't do a good job of it his first or second times around. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and say that the knee was too sore to play through, which is questionable. He still sulked on the sideline and went as far as keeping his helmet on during the Chargers' 21-12 loss to the Patriots. 5. Giants set NFL record with 10 straight road wins: Hitting the road was a sweet escape for the Giants, as they took a brake from the hatred of their home fans and won a record 10 straight road games. They won three straight away from home in the playoffs, ranging from mild temperatures in Tampa and Dallas to frigid cold in Green Bay in the NFC Championship game. 4. Is Brett Favre's final pass an overtime interception?: The big question again for Packers fan heading into the offseason is whether or not quarterback Brett Favre will return for another year. Seeing how poorly he played in the loss to New York, it's tough to imagine a competitor like Favre walking away with such a sour taste in his mouth. Look for the answer to this question to be a "No." 3. Tynes gets 1-2-3 chances for redemption: Against the Packers, Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes had three opportunities to kick the winning field goal. After misses from 43 and 36 yards, Tynes booted a 47-yarder in overtime to lift the Giants into Super Bowl XLII. With one swing of the leg, Tynes went from scapegoat and possible free agent to postseason hero. 2. Eli follows Peyton in back-to-back Manning Super Bowls: Eli Manning led the Giants to three straight road wins and ensured a second straight Super Bowl that featured a Manning brother. He did it a little differently than older brother Peyton, not racking up the gaudy statistics of Peyton's Super Bowl run, but by not shooting the Giants in the foot with turnovers. 1. The Brady Boot Incident: Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I have a tough time believing that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady's ankle was in need of a walking cast. It's a little too convenient that Brady was hobbling down the streets of NEW YORK CITY carrying flowers with his supermodel girlfriend and not having any clue that the paparazzi would get the shot. The Giants are suspicious, too, but the media will play this one up too much to not be a distraction. Welcome to the Bill Belichick School of Smoke and Mirrors. |
