| Jan. 24, 2008 - A look through last night's slate of NBA action and the naming of our All-Box Score team. Andrea Bargnani comes through with a solid effort against the Celtics, the Timberwolves beat the West-leading Suns for a second time, and more. |
Bargani Has First Worthwhile Game Since November: Toronto Raptors forward Andrea Bargnani put forth his first acceptable fantasy effort since November, scoring 20 points to go with 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 threes and a block. He helped the Raptors to a 114-112 win over the Celtics, owners of the NBA's best record (33-7). Bargani had been in an incredible slump before Wednesday, averaging 5.3 points in December and 6.4 in nine previous January games. He hadn't had a fantasy game worth mentioning since Nov. 30 vs. Cleveland when he went for 26-6-3 with a block and a steal. Magic Drills 18 Threes in Win Over Grizzlies: The Orlando Magic knocked down a franchise-record 18 three-pointers in cruising to a 112-85 win over the Memphis Grizzlies. Hedo Turkoglu led the charger with six 3s, and the Magic hit on 18 of its 33 attempts. Orlando is the only team in the NBA to have three players among the league's top 12 three-point shooters. Rashard Lewis ranks second with 115 makes, Keith Bogans is ninth with 89, and Turkoglu is 12th with 85. As a team, the Magic ranks behind just Phoenix and Golden State in 3-point shooting. In Other News From Memphis: Rookie point guard Mike Conley was steady again with 13 points, 5 assists and just 1 turnover in 37 minutes. The fourth overall pick in 2007, Conley leads this year's crop of rookies in both assists (5.0/game) and assist-to-turnover ratio (3.04). In his last four games, Conley has 26 assists and just three turnovers. He doesn't have explosive scoring potential, which puts a cap on his upside, but Conley is showing some serious skills in his debut. Like any rookie, consistency is still an issue. Check out Conley's home/road splits: 11.8 ppg/7.4, .500 FG pct./.421, 3.2 rpg/2.3, 7.6 apg/3.9, 1.6 spg/0.7. Jefferson, T-Wolves Beat Suns For Second Time: Al Jefferson had 39 points and 15 rebounds, and the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Phoenix Suns for the second time this season, 117-107. Minnesota's two wins over Phoenix now constitute 29 percent of its league-worst total of seven this season. Jefferson was a force yet again, recording his 31st double-double in 41 games, best in the Western Conference. He won't do much else for a fantasy team, shooting a low percentage from the free throw line (.697) and making relatively minimal contributions in assists (1.3), steals (1.0) and blocks (1.4). T in T-Mac Stands For Tease: Welcome back to the constant dilemma that is Houston Rockets forward Tracy McGrady. In and out of the lineup, then out for 11 games with a sore knee, now he's back and starting to tease while sitting on your fantasy team's bench. He had a part in the Rockets' final eight points in a 109-107 win over Seattle and finished with 28 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists. Now, if you're a McGrady owner, you have two choices. 1.) Continue to distrust him and keep him stashed on your bench, or 2.) Put him in your lineup, risk sporadic DNPs, and wait for the next injury to strike. It's becoming routine at this point in his career, and it won't matter if he is traded, as rumors have suggested he might. Is Kurt Hinrich Back?: Well, not yet, but a career-high 38 points on 14-of-21 shooting vs. Indiana was a nice start. The fifth-year guard entered the night with a .387 field goal percentage, but raised it to .401 after a big effort that also came with 10 assists, 7 rebounds, 4 threes and 6-of-6 free throws. His season statistics were still suffering because of a horrendous start in October and November. Since then, his field goal shooting, assists, turnovers and minutes have all trended up. Consider him almost safe for now, especially if he turns Wednesday's outburst into some momentum. The All-Box Score Team
