NBA: Gerald Wallace's Game Evolves

Jan. 10, 2008 - The fantasy performance of Charlotte Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace has gotten mixed reviews thus far in 2007-08. The 25-year old forward is averaging a career-high 20.3 points per game for the fourth straight season, but the evolution of his game has seriously cut into his valuable hustle stats.

You take the good with the bad in a case like this. The good is that Wallace is scoring at a higher clip, knocking down 3's at a career-high rate and shooting better than 70 percent from the free throw line for the first time. The bad is that his field goal percentage, rebounds, steals and blocks are all down, while his turnovers are up.

His game has become more ordinary, but a little more reliable at the same time. Wallace was not drafted to lead your fantasy team in scoring, he was drafted with hopes of getting 2+ blocks and 2+ steals every night.

You haven't gotten that, but you have gotten a more consistent, mature player in his seventh season. His usual November and December struggles have been replaced with regular double-digit scoring outputs and solid fantasy production each night.

In fact, Wallace has scored in double figures in 31 of his 33 games this season, where he scored more than 10 points in just 22 of his first 33 games last year.

And his secondary statistics have already taken a turn for the better. In five January contests, Wallace is averaging 9.4 rebounds and 5.0 assists, but with a whopping 4.6 turnovers per night.

Dustin Hockensmith's Take
Wallace is a strong finisher, so you can't take his decrease in productivity to the bank just yet. If he has the same second half as he did last year, his steals, blocks and rebounds will all be on par with his numbers from recent seasons.
